Protests Called Manipulations
Miguel Albuquerque accused extreme left radicals and the Communist Party of manipulating housing protests in Lisbon and Porto. He said the demonstrations are not genuine expressions of housing need but political actions designed to create instability.
"The protests are manipulations", Albuquerque stated this morning on the sidelines of a visit to the Caniçal Commercial Port. He criticized vandalism and confrontations during mainland demonstrations. He emphasized Madeira's distance from such protest movements, noting his government's focus on practical solutions rather than theatrical protests.
Housing Solution Through Construction
For Albuquerque, "housing is a problem" that is solved by building houses like we are doing in Madeira. He highlighted a significant regional investment of 175 million euros, plus municipal funds and future investments through the housing fund. This investment demonstrates concrete action to address the island's housing needs.
"The response is construction", he concluded, not making noise or agitating society. He also defended his government's strategy against criticism from protest organizers who demand different approaches to housing policy.
"The response to the housing problem is with public housing construction, not making noise or agitating and radicalizing positions in society."
