Investment Details
The Commercial Port of Caniçal will receive 27 million euros to expand its facilities and double cargo handling capacity. The investment includes 10 million euros for landfill expansion and funds for breakwater rehabilitation from the Madeira 2030 framework.
Capacity Increase
Three new electric cranes, representing a 14 million euro investment, will allow the port to double its cargo movement capacity. Cargo discharged in Madeira increased 35% between 2020 and 2025, with container traffic growing from 52,000 to 72,000 annually. The cranes arrived in mid-September and the landfill expansion is nearly complete.

Economic Impact
The port handles 95% of cargo that arrives in Madeira, showing its critical role in the island's economy.
Beyond the new cranes, the project includes investments in electricity, gas, and sanitation. It also includes technology including AI for container monitoring to collect data on cargo movements and obtain indicators for regional economic activity analysis. The next phase will expand the landfill in the port's eastern zone and rehabilitate the main breakwater to further increase operational capacity.
