You can now travel between Funchal and the airport on a 100% electric bus. The new buses started running on the Aerobus line this month, in October 2026.
The buses belong to the Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira, or CAM. They link Madeira International Airport with Funchal.
Eight New Buses for Two Islands
CAM bought eight electric buses in total. Five are for the Aerobus service. The other three will serve public transport in Porto Santo.
The buses are made by Karsan. Five are 12 metres long and three are 10 metres long.
When all eight buses are in service, they will cut CO2 emissions by over 850 tonnes a year.
How the Fleet Was Paid For
The buses, charging equipment and transformer stations cost about 5.2 million euros in total.
Of that, 2.7 million euros came from Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The money came through its REPowerEU strand, under a project called DESCARBONIZAR_RAM.
