Authorities in Madeira confirmed that the man accused of assaulting his wife in Machico was identified and detained this evening. The case drew wide attention after CCTV captured the assault, which left the victim hospitalized and took place in front of her nine-year-old son. The case had immediately been sent to the Public Prosecutor’s Office for urgent precautionary measures.

The Madeira branch of Social Security announced that it is closely following the situation through its victim support team. In a statement, officials emphasized that “all necessary steps were taken immediately to ensure the protection and assistance of the victim and her family.” Paula Margarido, the regional secretary for Inclusion, Youth and Labor, said she was “deeply shocked” by the violent assault.

The arrest occurred after the issuance and delivery of arrest warrants outside of flagrant crime by the DIAP - MP to the PSP at 6 pm today, with the suspect being intercepted at 7:28 pm.
