Swimmers Say They Saw Feces in the Water

On Wednesday morning, people at the Complexo Balnear da Barreirinha in Funchal said they saw what looked like sewage in the sea. Some reported brown stains in the water and claimed they could clearly identify human waste. One swimmer told Diário de Notícias da Madeira that the substance in the water was not algae, adding that the smell was also unusual.

Barreirinha Beach Holds a Blue Flag for Clean Water

The Barreirinha Complex is well known in Madeira and is run by the Funchal City Council. It has earned the Blue Flag, an international sign of high water quality and environmental care. Despite the latest complaints, the beach is set to receive the Blue Flag again for the 2025 bathing season.

Local Officials Have Not Yet Responded

As of Wednesday afternoon, there was no public comment from city officials or FrenteMar Funchal, the company that manages the swimming complex. It is still unknown whether any action is being taken to confirm the presence of sewage or to investigate its source.
