Housing Activists Call a People's Assembly in Funchal on Sunday

Organisers call a people's assembly on housing and tourism at Funchal's Municipal Garden on Sunday, 25 October, at 18:00.

Organisers have called a people's assembly in Funchal for Sunday, 25 October, at 18:00. It takes place in the Municipal Garden, the Jardim Municipal.

They say they act in solidarity with protests that are spreading across Portugal.

Funchal: the second most expensive city in Portugal to buy a home.

An economy held hostage by tourism, where one in five people is at risk of poverty, all while hotels multiply, resorts encroach upon protected areas, short-term vacation rentals proliferate, incentives for digital nomads and expats abound, and millionaires snap up their second, third, or fourth homes in a tax haven.

This is further exacerbated by the speculative games played by investment funds. The result? An entire generation unable to move out of their parents’ homes!
For all these reasons, and in solidarity with the protests spreading across the country, we are calling for a people’s assembly.
