Madeira Inflation Rises to 3.8% in September

Inflation in Madeira reached 3.8% in September 2026, driven by rising fuel prices and services costs.

The inflation rate in Madeira is 3.8% in September 2026, up 0.1 percentage points from August. This shows the second consecutive monthly increase, according to data released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM).

Goods prices rose 2.6% while services increased by 5.2%. The largest increases were seen in restaurants and accommodation services (7.6%), transport (6.8%), and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (4.1%). The only sector showing negative variation was information and communication at -1.7%.

"The acceleration of CPI (Consumer Price Index) is largely explained by the increase in fuel prices"

National Institute of Statistics (INE)

Year-on-year, inflation in Madeira was 4.6% in September 2026 compared to 3.6% nationally. National inflation also accelerated to 3.6% in September from 3.3% in August, according to the INE. These figures show Madeira's inflation remains above the national average.

The data suggests inflationary trends may continue without targeted intervention in key sectors like energy and housing. Policymakers face challenges in balancing economic growth with price stability measures. Recent data indicates that without effective monetary policy measures, inflation could remain elevated for an extended period, affecting household budgets across the region.
