The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has demanded explanations from the Regional Government. They want clarity on the studies and planned interventions to reopen Regional Road 105 between Encumeada and Paul da Serra.
MP BasĂlio Santos expressed regret that, two years after the heavy rainfall in February and the wildfires in August 2024 that led to the road's closure, the proposed solutions to ensure safety and allow vehicles to pass remain unknown

Economic Impact on Local Businesses
The closure has hurt the local economy, especially the restaurant and hotel sectors that rely on traffic through the mountainous region. Businesses are reporting losses and some face the risk of permanent closure. The closure has now lasted over two years, affecting daily commutes and goods transport.
Safety and Tourism Concerns
Beyond economics, the road closure has compromised fire prevention efforts in the Ribeira Brava mountains. It has also eliminated an alternative route to popular tourist destinations such as Bica da Cana, Paul da Serra, Fanal and Rabaçal. Reopening the road would alleviate traffic pressure on the western coastal roads.
Impact on Daily Life
The closure has forced residents to take longer detours, increasing travel time and fuel costs. Essential services like waste delivery and emergency response face delays due to the detours. Local farmers also struggle to transport their produce to markets efficiently.
"What is demanded is that the Government says what was done, brings a calendar and indicates dates for the road reopening."
BasĂlio Santos, Deputy of JPP
