Youth Party Warns Housing Crisis Continues

Juventude JPP warns housing remains unaffordable for Madeiran youth five decades after 1974 revolution

Ongoing Struggle for Youth

The Juventude do Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) warns that housing access remains a critical challenge for young people in Madeira.

This is fifty years after the April 25th revolution.

Young graduates with degrees often consider emigrating to afford basic living conditions.

The indicators show that housing access is one of the biggest challenges for Madeiran youth. They face increasing difficulties achieving independence and building a life on their own island.

"But is it selfish to demand a salary that lasts the month? Is it selfish to want a house without compromising almost all of your income? Before criticizing those who protest, the Government must explain what it is doing to solve these problems"

Diogo Monteiro, Vice-President of Juventude JPP

Housing prices rose 17.6% in 2025 according to INE data, with median rents for new contracts reaching €12.78 per square meter in Q2 2026. Many young people delay financial independence because incomes fail to match living costs, not due to lack of work ethic.

The party demands more public housing at affordable costs, better salaries, and action against precarious work. They also seek policies enabling youth to remain in Madeira and build their futures. They warn Portugal cannot continue educating youth only to lose them to emigration.
