Overview of August 2026 Statistics
Madeira recorded 238 deaths and 136 births in August 2026. This resulted in a natural population decrease of 102 people. While mortality decreased by 1.7% compared to August 2025, births fell by 11.7% over the same period.
Birth-Death Gap Analysis
The gap between births and deaths widened despite the decline in mortality. This produced a natural balance of -102 individuals, which is less favorable than the -88 recorded in August 2025. For the first eight months of 2026, however, the natural balance improved from -862 to -766 people compared to the same period last year.
Detailed Demographics
Between January and August, Madeira recorded 1,926 deaths (28 fewer than in 2025, a 1.4% reduction). During the same period, there were 1,160 births (68 more than in 2025, a 6.2% increase). August deaths were 11.5% above the 2016-2019 average of 214 deaths per month.
In August, 113 men (47.5%) and 125 women (52.5%) died. Among those aged 65 and over, 21.8% were aged 65-74, 35.7% were 75-84, and 31.9% were 85 or older. No infant or fetal deaths were recorded.
More boys than girls were born: 71 male and 65 female infants. Marriages increased in August 2026, with 129 ceremonies (10.3% more than August 2025). However, the January-August total of 761 marriages was 3.5% below the 2025 figure.
