Madeira will send emergency alerts to residents and visitors via SMS during risk or emergency situations. The system covers everyone on the island regardless of nationality or mobile service provider.
Messages will be sent in Portuguese or English based on technical criteria to identify recipients.
The alert system operates through protocols signed between Madeira's Regional Civil Protection Service and telecom operators MEO, NOS, and Vodafone.
"a determining step in implementing the new regional risk monitoring and communication system, special alert, and population warning"
Micaela Freitas, Regional Secretary of Health and Civil Protection
The mechanism aims to strengthen speed, reach, and effectiveness of information transmitted to the population in dangerous situations. It enables citizens to receive guidance and adopt self-protection behaviors.
Signing of the agreements this morning integrates the Disaster Risk Reduction week program.
The operational date for the system has not been disclosed.
Officials say the SMS alerts will complement existing siren and media-based warning systems already in place across Madeira's municipalities.
The system represents a significant upgrade to Madeira's emergency notification capabilities.
It will particularly help reach tourists and visitors who may not have local phone numbers or be familiar with traditional alert methods.
