Madeira Says TAP Sale Must Not Cut Island Air Links

Madeira Says TAP Sale Must Not Cut Island Air Links

Madeira's government says the sale of up to 49.9% of TAP to Lufthansa must not weaken the air links between the islands and the mainland.

The President of Madeira's Regional Government says the TAP privatisation cannot put the air links to Madeira and the Azores at risk. The State must still enforce public service obligations and territorial continuity, he argues, even with a new shareholder in the company.

The question is live because the national government has chosen Lufthansa to buy up to 49.9% of the airline. The plan sells 44.9% to a lead investor and keeps up to 5% for workers. For now, the State still holds most of the capital.

What Happens Next

Choosing Lufthansa does not close the deal. Final talks and regulatory approvals come next, and those steps could stretch the sale out to 2028.

For Madeira, the central question stays the same: whether TAP will keep a service that fits residents' mobility needs and the region's connection to the mainland.

The report does not say what the agreement promises about the island routes, and it carries no comment from the national government.
