Madeirans Gave 33.1 Tons of Food to Families in Need

Madeirans donated 33.1 tons of food during the 26th ‘Saco’ campaign, supporting local families and demonstrating remarkable community solidarity.

33.1 Tons Gathered in the 26th ‘Saco’ Campaign Across 29 Supermarkets

The Madeira Food Bank collected 33.1 tons of food during this weekends “Saco” campaign, which took place in 29 supermarkets. The drive brought shoppers, volunteers and partner organisations together in one of the island’s main annual efforts to help families in need.

Donations Rise 11.4 Percent Compared With the Same Weekend in 2024

The Banco Alimentar said this year’s result shows an 11.4% rise compared with the same period in 2024. It also represents a 5.1% increase over the previous collection held in May 2025. These gains suggest that more residents are willing to contribute, even during a period marked by rising living costs.

More Than 800 Volunteers Help Support Over 50 Institutions

More than 800 volunteers helped sort, transport and organise the donations throughout the island. Their work will help the Banco Alimentar supply more than 50 partner institutions for the next six months. In a message to the press, the organisation said:

Our sincere thank you to the people of Madeira who shared a little of their weekly supermarket shopping with those who need it most. To the more than 800 volunteers who, across the island, helped carry out this solidarity effort and took part in the largest volunteer movement in the country, our recognition and gratitude for giving some of your time to others.

Donations Still Accepted Until 8 December Through Ajuda Vale

People can still take part until 8 December. Contributions can be made through the Ajuda Vale campaign, by buying product vouchers at Pingo Doce supermarket checkouts. Online donations are also available through the Food Bank’s website, giving residents another way to help families who rely on this support.
