O Portinho: New €100 Million Hotel in Santa Cruz

Blessing or curse? Madeira’s heavy dependence on tourism is set to further intensify with the announcement of the €100 million beachside hotel project “O Portinho” in Caniço.

New Five-Star “O Portinho” Project in Caniço

A real estate company Portinho – Investimentos e Projetos Imobiliários, S.A. has unveiled plans for a €100 million development that will transform the Caniço waterfront. The project, called O Portinho, includes a five-star hotel and several blocks of long-term tourist apartments.

It was stated in a press release that the plan aims to place Santa Cruz “on the map of international tourism.” The design emphasizes sustainability, landscape integration, and a positive economic impact on the local community.

Beach Access Will Remain Accessible to The Public

Although the project is fully licensed, construction has not yet started. The developer clarified that only surface cleaning and preparation of the site have been carried out so far. It was also confirmed that access to the beach will not be privatized and will remain open for public use.

In the same statement, the company added that the project includes the creation of a public promenade, ensuring “free and continuous access to the seafront, without any appropriation of the beach for private use.”

160 Accommodation Units and Public Facilities Including 250 Parking Spaces

The future hotel will feature 160 accommodation units, including rooms and serviced apartments designed for long-term visitors. The concept aims to strengthen the area’s tourism potential and make use of a previously underdeveloped coastal site.

The company also promised the following:

  • 250 public parking spaces

  • A seaside promenade with public beach access

  • Public restrooms and a café supporting the bathing area

  • Rehabilitation of local watercourses with environmental protection measures
