Ponta do Sol Announces Estrada dos Anjos Project

Ponta do Sol intends to partially cover Estrada dos Anjos, following the Tabua-Ribeira Brava model, to ensure safety while preserving the landscape.

Ponta do Sol Aims To Start Estrada dos Anjos Project By First Quarter 2026

The municipal government of Ponta do Sol expects to begin a long-awaited project to intervene on the Estrada dos Anjos by the end of the first quarter of this year. The plan focuses on safety works along a cliffside stretch while keeping the area’s visual character intact.

The project is still at an early stage. Municipal officials say technical studies are required before final designs can be completed, making it difficult to define a clear deadline for the work to be finished.

More Than Just Safety Measures

Local authorities stress that the intervention will not focus only on installing protective structures. Preserving the landscape, which is considered an important tourist attraction, is also a central concern.

It is not just about putting barriers on the cliff; it is about doing it in a way that gives some safety and also preserves the landscape (…) We also cannot kill the tourist spot, as crossing later causes a very strong impact.

Rui Marques, the mayor, tells Antena 1 that the solution will be the construction of a false tunnel, but with open areas.

Design Expected To Follow Marginal do Tabua

According to the municipality, the intervention is expected to follow the same design approach used on the Marginal do Tabua. The coastal road between Ribeira Brava and Tabua, inaugurated in 2020, combined covered sections with reinforced areas to reduce risk while limiting the visual impact on the surroundings.

Some stretches near the waterfall area and other exposed zones are expected to receive targeted protection, rather than continuous heavy structures, in an effort to keep the landscape as intact as possible.

Technical Analysis Required Before Setting A Completion Deadline

Municipal officials say it is not yet possible to define a timeline for completing the project. The road’s location along a steep escarpment requires a detailed technical assessment to evaluate risks and select appropriate construction methods.

This analysis is seen as essential to ensure safety while avoiding unnecessary damage to the surrounding environment.

Estrada dos Anjos was another of the highlighted topics, with the Regional Government has expressed willingness to collaborate in its requalification. It will now be up to them. to the Municipality of Ponta do Sol the elaboration of a project that guarantees better safety conditions, while preserving the area's landscape identity

Funding Sought Through Programa Sustentável 2030 After Earlier Delays

The municipality has already met with the regional government, which has indicated its willingness to cooperate on the project. Local leaders hope to secure financing through the Programa Sustentável 2030.

A previous study carried out by the municipality took about two years and did not result in a formal project being presented to the government. Officials say they have now taken the initiative to move forward, with the aim of completing a full project and securing the necessary funding.
