Ahead of the Portuguese Presidential Elections on January 18, and following visits by Mendes and Ventura to Madeira, Henrique Gouveia e Melo is scheduled to meet with Madeirans tomorrow.

Presidential Candidate Gouveia e Melo Arrives in Madeira Tomorrow

Henrique Gouveia e Melo, retired Portuguese Navy admiral and candidate for the 2026 Presidential Election, is scheduled to visit Madeira tomorrow. The visit forms part of his campaign, which he describes as “supra‑party”, focused on national unity, ahead of the Portuguese presidential election on 18 January 2026.

Two Public Events Set: 11:00 and 20:00 in Santa Cruz and Funchal

On 26 December, Gouveia e Melo will first meet the public at 11:00 in Vila Natal, Santa Cruz. Later the same day, he will hold a second public contact session from 18:00 at Praça Central in Funchal. Afterward, he is expected to offer statements to the media near the Estátua de João Gonçalves Zarco around 19:00.

Visit Comes Amid Formal Presidential Campaign After Signature Submission

The admiral formalised his presidential bid earlier in December, submitting more than 10,000 signatures to the Constitutional Court, above the minimum required to qualify. In comments following that submission, he said he aims to uphold the Constitution and strengthen Portugal’s security and stability.

There is no party for me, my only party is Portugal.

Tour Includes Stop in Azores Following Madeira Events

After his time in Madeira, Gouveia e Melo will travel to the Azores, where he will remain between 27 and 29 December. During that stay, he plans to meet local institutions and businesses to continue public engagement ahead of the election.
