Rooney Says Ronaldo Undermined Portugal's Coach and Team

Wayne Rooney has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo for walking out of the Portugal camp, saying he undermined his coach, his teammates and the federation.

Wayne Rooney has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo for the way he left the Portugal squad. The former England forward says the Madeiran disrespected the coach, his teammates and the Portuguese Football Federation.

Rooney spoke on the podcast 'Stick to United'. He played 205 games next to Ronaldo at Manchester United, where they shared a dressing room between 2004 and 2009.

"In my opinion, it was wrong in every sense. To undermine his coach and his teammates the way he did was very wrong. He undermined the Federation."

He also said it would be a shame if this ended Ronaldo's Portugal career. In his view, the forward is not handling the end of his career well, and that is uncomfortable to watch.

Ronaldo left the camp on 30 September, before Nations League matches against Denmark and Norway. He blamed a breach of trust by the coach, Jorge Jesus.

In a statement on 6 October, Ronaldo apologised to fans and teammates. He said he would be available again for the national team once he has served his suspension. He added that he would need to be fit and scoring at his club.

The report does not say how long that suspension will be, and it carries no response from Jorge Jesus or from the federation.
