Weather Warning Moved 3 Hours, New Year Fireworks Will Take Place

Madeiras president explained that the orange weather alert only takes places from 03:00 and not from 00:00 as previously forecasted, which is why the celebrations will take place.

Regional Government Confirms Fireworks Will Begin at 00:00 on 1 January

Miguel Albuquerque, president of the Regional Government of Madeira, confirmed that the traditional New Year’s fireworks display in Funchal will take place at 00:00 on 1 January. Speaking at a press conference on 30 December, Albuquerque said that current weather forecasts do not justify changing or canceling the event.

The orange alert only starts at 03:00 tomorrow, so the fireworks will go ahead

The fireworks show is one of Madeira’s most anticipated annual events, attracting locals and tourists to the bay area.

The government is warning the public to exercise caution when traveling from 3 a.m. onwards, due to worsening weather conditions.

The musical entertainment that was scheduled for after midnight may be subject to change.

The State Government considered the possibility of moving the fireworks display to 20:00, but will maintain the midnight schedule.

Orange Weather Alert Now Only From 03:00 Does Not Affect Fireworks Schedule

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the orange weather alert will be activated at 03:00 on 1 January. Albuquerque explained that because the alert occurs after the scheduled display, organizers see no reason to alter the timing.

The weather on the first day of the year will be affected by Storm Francis, which will cause heavy rain, wind and strong waves in mainland Portugal and with greater intensity in Madeira, according to IPMA, which admits the possibility of raising the warning to red, the most severe level, due to the precipitation.

He added that while conditions may not be ideal for a full celebration, they are sufficient to carry out the pyrotechnic show safely. Event staff are reportedly prepared to manage the situation if weather conditions worsen after the display.

Authorities Emphasize Safety Measures Despite Less-Than-Ideal Conditions

Albuquerque acknowledged that the weather might limit the usual festive atmosphere along Funchal Bay, but stressed that safety remains a priority. Organizers will ensure that crowd management and firework protocols are strictly followed. He said:

The fireworks can be carried out safely, even if the conditions are not perfect.

If there are any changes, we will communicate them at lunchtime (tomorrow).
