Nearly 900 Fewer Unemployed Than Last Year
Unemployment in Madeira continues to fall. In May, 5,935 people were registered as jobless with the regional employment office. That’s 897 fewer than in May 2024 - a drop of more than 13%. Madeira remains the region with the highest year-on-year decrease.
Regional Government Welcomes the Results
Paula Margarido, Secretary for Inclusion, Labour, and Youth, said the numbers show that local job and training policies are working. In a statement, she said they are “leading to more real opportunities” for people across Madeira and Porto Santo. She also noted that unemployment figures can change due to national and international conditions. Still, she believes the long-term trend shows that Madeira is “on the right path.”
Monthly Drop Also Noted
Madeira also saw fewer jobless people compared to April. The number of unemployed fell by 398 in just one month - a 6.3% decrease. This is one of the largest monthly drops in the country, behind only the Algarve and Alentejo.
Job Recovery Seen Across the Country
Nationally, unemployment dropped 3.0% compared to May last year. Lisbon and the Algarve also saw notable improvements, but Madeira stands out for both yearly and monthly gains. Local officials hope this positive trend continues, despite wider economic challenges.
