A container broke loose from a truck as it traveled on the VR1 between Santa Cruz and Funchal. The container crashed onto the southbound lane, uprooting the central divider, knocking down lighting poles, safety barriers, and part of a bridge guardrail. Fortunately, no cars where hit.

The southbound lane from Caniço Baixo remains closed. Authorities advised drivers to use either the municipal road to Portinho or the old regional airport road as alternative routes. Officials said they are working to reopen traffic but could not give a precise timeframe.
