Easter Holidays Contributed to the Growth, Which is Lower Than Other Regions

One reason for this record may be the timing of Easter. In 2025, Easter was in April, while in 2024 it took place in March. This shift likely led to more domestic tourists visiting the islands during the holiday period. Even with this growth, Madeira had one of the smallest increases in overnight stays among the nine main tourism regions of Portugal. Only Lisbon and the West and Tagus Valley grew more slowly. Regions such as the Center of Portugal, the Azores, and the North all had growth rates of more than 12%.

the 10 main source markets accounted for 80.4% of the total overnight stays recorded in April 2025. Germany stood out with the highest share (19.4% of the total; +5.6% compared to April 2024), followed by Portugal (16.7% of the total; +39.9%), which in this month rose to 2nd place, surpassing the United Kingdom.

More Revenue Per Room and Night

Revenue figures were also strong. Total revenue from tourist stays reached €73.5 million, an increase of 22.2% compared to April 2024. Revenue from lodging alone was €54 million, up by 26.9%. These increases are higher than the national averages for the same period.

The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in April reached €101.33, a rise of 24% from the previous year. The average revenue per used room (ADR) was €126.11, an increase of 20.8%. For the first four months of 2025, the total RevPAR stood at €80.12 - 22.1% more than during the same period in 2024.

Germans Lead, as Portuguese Tourists Climb to Second Place

German visitors remained the largest group, responsible for 19.4% of all overnight stays in April. Portuguese travelers, however, increased sharply - up 39.9% from last year - making them the second-largest group. They passed British tourists for the first time since August 2023. The British market accounted for 14.5% of overnight stays and grew slightly (2.1%). Other key visitor groups included the French, who made up 9.7% of stays (but with a 6.2% drop), and the Polish, who represented 5.9% of the total and increased their stays by over 40%.
