Too Many Tourists? How Madeira Deals with the Crowds
A newly released DW Travel video looks at how Madeira is coping with overtourism. In 2024, Madeira received over 2.2 million tourists for about 250,000 residents, leading to crowded hotspots like Funchal’s old town, the Mercado dos Lavradores, and the Monte toboggan rides.
To manage this, authorities have limited new short-term rentals in Funchal and introduced paid time-slot systems for popular hiking trails such as the 25 Fontes levada.
The 10 minute video also interviews regional secretary Eduardo Jesus and his view on some of the most discussed issues in the island.
There is not a negative impact because all the island has places to stay
There is no concentration of people. There is no concentration like that in Madeira
Eduardo Jesus, DW
