3,796 New Passenger Cars Registered In 2025 Across Madeira Market

In 2025, a total of 3,796 light passenger cars were registered in Madeira. The data shows a market divided between fuel types, with

  • 1,689 cars running on gasoline

  • 1,012 fully electric vehicles

The figures indicate that electric cars already account for a large part of new registrations. While gasoline remains the largest single category, the gap with electric models has narrowed significantly in the regional market.

Hybrid And Gasoline Combined Reached 44.4% And 40% Share

Hybrid vehicles reached 44.4% of the market share for new vehicles sold in Madeira over the last year. Gasoline cars followed closely at 40%, while diesel dropped to 11% of total registrations.

Together, electrified vehicles account for almost half of the market when hybrids and fully electric cars are combined. The shift is uneven but clear, with diesel showing the weakest position among all categories.

Dealers also point to long-term cost balance. The price difference between electric and traditional cars is often recovered in about 3–4 years, according to market participants in Madeira.

First National Case Where Electric Cars Surpass Gasoline Sales

Across Portugal, 2025 also brought a key milestone: electric cars sold more units than gasoline vehicles for the first time. In Madeira, the trend is similar but moves at a slower pace than on the mainland.

Charging Access And Price Gap Still Shape Buying Decisions

Some residents still hesitate to switch to electric cars due to limited charging access in residential buildings. In several cases, drivers without private parking find it difficult to install chargers.

At the same time, electric cars remain more expensive at purchase compared with gasoline models. However, users and sellers note that the difference in cost is often balanced within 3–4 years of use, depending on driving patterns and electricity prices.
