Almost 20 Million Bus Passengers Since the Beginning of 2025

In 2025, Madeira saw rising used car registrations, falling new car sales, 19.5 million bus passengers, higher cable car revenue, airport growth, and increased maritime traffic.

Used Vehicle Registrations Rise While New Car Purchases Fall 12.5%

Between January and September 2025, Madeira’s registries recorded the transfer of 4,271 used vehicles, a 12.1% increase compared with the same period in 2024.

Most were passenger cars (87.8%), followed by light commercial vehicles (8.4%) and cargo trucks (3.8%). In contrast, new vehicle acquisitions by residents fell 12.5%, with 4,186 units registered, including rentals. In the third quarter, only 1,303 new vehicles were purchased, 643 fewer than the same quarter in 2024.

Public Transport and Cable Cars Carry Millions of Passengers in 2025

From January to September 2025, Madeira’s buses transported 19.5 million passengers. Urban routes accounted for 12.7 million (64.8%), while interurban routes carried 6.9 million (35.2%).

Cable car ticket sales reached 1,136.8 thousand, up 2.5% from 2024 generating €15.7 million in revenue, a 15.2% increase. In the third quarter, ticket sales fell slightly by 0.5%, but revenue grew 16.8%.

Madeira Airports Handle 13.1% More Passengers in Early 2025

Madeira’s airports carried 4,357 thousand passengers between January and September 2025, up 13.1% from the same period in 2024.

  • Porto Santo Airport increased 11.3%

Aircraft occupancy rate averaged 85.9%, slightly below the previous year (88.0%).

Maritime Traffic Rises in Passengers and Cargo at Regional Ports

In the first nine months of 2025, 184 cruise ships entered Madeira’s ports, carrying 403,495 passengers, a 4.5% increase from 2024.

Funchal Port received 402,359 passengers, mostly Europeans - 39.6% German and 38.3% British.

On the Madeira-Porto Santo line (Lobo Marinho), 319,600 passengers traveled from January to September 2025, an increase of 0.9% compared with the first nine months of 2024.
