Bad Weather in Madeira: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Expected

Unstable weather continues as May approaches, with strong winds, heavy showers, and even snow expected in the mountains.

Yellow Weather Warning Issued for Madeira and Porto Santo

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has forecasted a day of unstable weather for Madeira today. The island should expect cloudy skies with showers becoming more frequent and stronger in the afternoon. The southern side of the island and highlands will likely be most affected. Thunderstorms are possible, and snowfall could happen in the highest areas of Madeira.

An official yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall. This warning now includes not only Madeira but also Porto Santo, the northern coast, and mountainous regions.

Sea Conditions Will Worsen Throughout the Day

The Funchal Port Authority has updated its strong wind warning for the coastal areas of Madeira. The alert remains active until 6 p.m. on Wednesday. At sea, waves from the northwest will reach 2.5 to 3.5 meters, growing later to heights of 3.5 to 4.5 meters. On the island’s southern coast, waves are expected to be between 2 and 3 meters, increasing to 3 to 4 meters in the western area.

Sea surface temperatures are expected to remain between 18 and 19 degrees Celsius, which is within the usual range for this time of year but may feel colder due to the wind.

Temperatures Will Stay Mild but Vary Between Regions

In Madeira, air temperatures will range from 14°C in the early morning to a high of 20°C. In Porto Santo, the forecast is slightly cooler, with temperatures between 13°C and 19°C. Funchal will also face heavy showers later in the day, along with the same wind patterns expected across the island.
