Ceremony Brings Together Local and Regional Leaders at Press Museum
Câmara de Lobos celebrated its 190th anniversarytoday, with a solemn ceremony at the Madeira Press Museum. The event gathered local authorities, regional representatives, and invited guests to celebrate nearly two centuries of municipal history.
The day began with the raising of the municipal flag and a parade by the local fire brigade. Throughout the day, celebrations continued in different parishes with concerts by local and municipal bands.
Speeches Highlight Community Spirit and Historical Importance
During the ceremony, several officials addressed the audience, including Pedro Freitas, president of the Municipal Assembly, Mayor Sónia Pereira, and Miguel Albuquerque, president of Madeira’s Regional Government. In her speech, Mayor Pereira spoke about the importance of preserving the town’s identity while continuing its development.
The town itself, however, is much older. It was one of the first places settled on the island of Madeira after its discovery in the early 15th century. The name Câmara de Lobos means “chamber of seals,” referring to the monk seals (lobos-marinhos) that were once common in the sheltered bay where fishermen built their homes.
Nine Citizens and Institutions Receive Honors for Service to the Community
As part of the celebration, nine individuals and institutions were honored for their contributions to the local community. The awards recognized achievements in culture, public service, and civic engagement.
Music and Tradition Fill the Streets of Câmara de Lobos
The 190th anniversary was also celebrated with music and gatherings across the municipality. Philharmonic and municipal bands performed in parishes such as Câmara de Lobos, Quinta Grande, Jardim da Serra, and Curral das Freiras, bringing residents together to mark the special occasion.
