Câmara de Lobos Launches Seabird-Safe Lighting

Câmara de Lobos has introduced new seabird-friendly LED lighting as part of an environmental initiative to reduce light pollution.

City Implements 29 New LED Lights in Pilot Project

The Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos has installed 29 new LED lights as part of the LIFE Natura@night pilot project. This initiative, led by the Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves (SPEA), aims to protect biodiversity, particularly seabirds, while promoting energy efficiency and better public lighting standards.

Controlled-Spectrum LED Lights to Minimize Light Pollution

The new lighting uses controlled-spectrum LED technology designed to reduce the emission of blue light, which has harmful effects on nocturnal wildlife. According to the municipality’s statement, the installation not only helps protect local wildlife but also reduces electricity consumption, contributing to energy efficiency.

The new lights, in addition to benefiting local seabirds, provide a more pleasant and illuminated environment for the city's residents and visitors.

Collaboration Between Municipalities, NGOs, and Scientists

The LIFE Natura@night project is a collaborative effort involving local governments, NGOs, and scientists, all working towards sustainable practices. Dina Silva, the councilor for the environment in Câmara de Lobos, emphasized the project’s importance for environmental sustainability, noting its balance of biodiversity protection and urban safety.
