CDS Wants Simpler Rules to Legalise Homes in Câmara de Lobos

The CDS wants Câmara de Lobos to cut red tape for small building works and for legalising existing homes, as a response to the housing crisis.

The CDS party wants Câmara de Lobos to make it easier to legalise existing homes. It wants this in the review of the municipality's building and planning regulation.

Local party leader Lídio Aguiar asks for faster and clearer procedures for small building works. He sees the review as a key chance to respond to the housing crisis.

Families build on what they have

Aguiar points to the high cost of buying and renting a home today. That is why he wants a closer look at the houses that already exist.

"More and more families are looking for solutions within the family, in their parents' or relatives' homes, needing to restore, adapt or extend these homes so that their children and grandchildren can have a space of their own [...]."

Safety rules stay in place

Aguiar says simpler does not mean no rules. Buildings in risk areas, for example next to streams, would be left out.

A legal home gives owners more legal security. It also shows the real value of the property and makes it easier to pass on to heirs.

The council would gain too. More legal homes mean more property tax (IMI) for the municipality.

The party also wants the council to offer more technical support. Families should get help to see which works are possible and how to make them legal.

The CDS did not give figures on how many homes in the municipality are not legal.
