General Crime Drops 6.4% in Madeira With Violent Crime Down 1.5% in 2025
Police data released today show that overall crime in Madeira decreased by 6.4% compared with the same period last year (Jan–Jul 2025 vs Jan–Jul 2024). Violent and serious crime also fell by 1.5%.
Authorities highlighted a significant decline in burglaries: 83 fewer cases of theft inside homes were reported. Police noted that such crimes often have a strong impact on how safe residents feel.
Summer Campaign Inspects Nearly 6,000 Vehicles and Finds 702 Violations
Between June 15 and September 15, the Public Security Police (PSP) carried out its Verão Seguro (“Safe Summer”) campaign. During this period, officers inspected nearly 6,000 vehicles and recorded 702 violations. The most common problems included 259 drivers without the mandatory vehicle inspection, 169 caught speeding, and 79 driving under the influence of alcohol with blood levels between 0.5 and 1.19.
So, if we also take into account, already within this period, residential burglaries, which normally have a strong impact on people’s sense of security, we see a reduction of 83 crimes compared to the same period last year.
Eleven Traffic Deaths Reported in 2025, Almost the Total of All 2024 Fatalities
Despite the fall in crime, traffic accidents remain a serious problem on the island. So far this year, 11 people have died in crashes, almost the same as the total number of road deaths recorded in all of 2024. Police said traffic violations and road safety continue to be among the most pressing issues in the region. Meanwhile, surveillance of 55 homes and inspections in shops during the same campaign resulted in 25 violations and 10 arrests for drug trafficking.
