Estrada Monumental, one of Funchal's main roads, was completely flooded on Saturday near the Anjo roundabout. Video shared on social media shows water running down the street like a river.
Intense and prolonged rain has caused damage and flooding across Madeira, according to RTP Madeira. Several other videos of the flooding have also circulated online.
Days of Warnings Before the Flooding
Civil Protection had already warned days earlier of possible urban flooding, fallen trees and drainage problems. The region's weather service, IPMA, extended its yellow rain and wind warnings for Madeira through Sunday.
Forecasters said rain would be most intense over the weekend. Gusts could reach 110 km/h in the mountains, and waves up to four metres were expected on the south coast.
