On December 9, the first 3x3 basketball court was inaugurated in Madeira. The ceremony included the Mayor of Funchal and representatives from basketball associations.
The Funchal municipality invested approximately 60,000 euros to remodel the mini-court in Jardins da d’Ajuda, now known as the 3x3 BASKETART court, meeting international standards.
The project integrated urban art on the pavement by artist Zeca Diogo, paying tribute to Maria Joao Correia and Mario Fernandes, both successful Portuguese basketball players.
This initiative makes Funchal the 27th municipality to join the 3x3 BasketArt program, with the court being the 50th supported by the Portuguese Basketball Federation (FPB) and the 48th in Portugal.
What is Basketart?
BasketArt is a project developed by the Portuguese Basketball Federation (FPB). It aims to create engaging and visually appealing basketball courts in outdoor urban settings by incorporating street art, preferably created by local artists. It targets a younger audience, promoting a fun and inclusive environment for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy basketball.
The combination of basketball and street art encourages healthy lifestyles, social interaction, creativity, and community pride. The project seeks partnerships to bring BasketArt courts to various municipalities. For more information, visit the project website.
