The government has suspended Porto Santo’s Master Plan for two years, allowing construction of a €5.5 million photovoltaic park to advance the island’s renewable energy goals.

Suspension of PDM in Porto Santo Clears Path for Renewable Energy

The Regional Government of Madeira has decided to partially suspend the Porto Santo Municipal Master Plan for two years. The measure will allow the construction of a photovoltaic park in the Campo de Cima area, a project led by the Madeira Electricity Company. Officials explained that the suspension was taken under a legal provision that permits such action in “exceptional cases of regional interest.”

Goal: An Island Without Fossil Fuels

The government has repeatedly underlined its ambition to make Porto Santo the first island in Madeira to operate without fossil fuels. The photovoltaic park will generate electricity from sunlight and will complement the existing wind farm on the island. Together, these facilities are designed to reduce dependence on imported fuel and increase energy autonomy.
