Heat Reaches 31°C at Pico do Arieiro

The mountainous regions of Madeira are experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures that technically meet the criteria for a red weather warning.

31°C - Extreme Temperatures in Madeira’s Mountain Region

Today afternoon, the temperature at Pico do Arieiro climbed to 31°C, according to official records from the local weather station. The peak occurred at 15:10h, during what is turning into one of the hottest periods of the summer so far. Just below the summit, in Chão do Areeiro, temperatures also reached 29.8°C around 3:00 p.m.

These readings are particularly significant because they exceed the threshold for a red weather warning. According to the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA), a red alert may be triggered when temperatures in mountainous areas surpass 29°C.
