Portugal's weather service has raised its rain warning for parts of Madeira to orange. The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) expects showers that will at times be heavy and come with thunderstorms.
The orange warning covers the South Coast and the mountain regions of Madeira island. These are the areas where the weather is expected to be at its worst.
Orange Warning Runs From 00:00 to 09:00 on Sunday, 1 November
The orange warning will be in force from midnight until 09:00 on Sunday, 1 November. IPMA expects conditions to get worse during this period.
The same areas will first be under a yellow warning from 21:00 on Saturday until midnight. After 09:00 on Sunday, the alert drops back to yellow and stays in place until 12:00.
Civil Protection Urges Residents to Step Up Preventive Measures
The Regional Civil Protection Service is warning residents that the weather will worsen in Madeira over the coming days. It is asking people to strengthen their preventive measures, as there may be periods of heavy rain.
North Coast and Porto Santo Also Placed Under Yellow Warnings
The bad weather is not limited to the south. The North Coast of Madeira is also under a yellow rain warning, from 21:00 on Saturday until 12:00 on Sunday. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are possible there too.
On Porto Santo, IPMA has issued a yellow warning for Sunday, from 06:00 to 15:00, for the same reason.
As a result, the whole region will be under weather warnings for part of Sunday morning. The highest risk remains on Madeira's South Coast and high ground, between 00:00 and 09:00.
