City Leader Considers Restrictions Amid Rising Damage
Cristina Pedra, the Mayor of Funchal, is considering limiting access to the city’s Jardim Municipal during nighttime hours. While no final decision has been made, she mentioned that continued acts of vandalism have led the local government to think seriously about new rules to protect the area.

Repeat Vandalism Puts Public Spaces at Risk
The discussion follows a pattern of damage reported in several green spaces around Funchal. One notable case is the garden in front of the city’s theater, where the city planted a variety of plants and carried out reforestation work. According to Pedra, large sums of public money have gone into improving these areas, only for them to be damaged shortly after.
Access Limits Not a Simple Decision
Closing or restricting access to public gardens, especially one as central as the Jardim Municipal, is not a step the city takes lightly. Pedra acknowledged that it is difficult to take away public access to a space that belongs to everyone. However, she stressed the need to consider both the benefits and the drawbacks of such a measure.
