Madeira Airport Celebrates 61 Years

Madeira Airport celebrates 61 years today. In 2024, it served 5.1 million passengers, growing from a small local airport into a busy international hub connecting Madeira with the world.

From Island Runway to International Gateway

The Madeira Airport, now officially known as Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, is marking its 61th anniversary. Since the inaugural landing of a TAP Air Portugal aircraft on July 8, 1964, the airport has gone through major changes. Once a small regional hub, it is today a modern and busy terminal connecting Madeira to the world.

Over the decades, the airport has grown in size, technology, and passenger numbers. In 2023, it handled more than 4.5 million travelers - a 43% increase compared to 2019. This growth reflects not only the island’s popularity but also the airport’s efforts to improve the passenger experience.

In recognition of its progress, the airport received the Best Airport 2023 award (under 5 million passengers) from the Airport Council International and earned the highest level of environmental certification - ACA Level 5.

Looking Ahead with Sustainability in Mind

The airport’s future plans are tied closely to environmental goals. Operated by ANA|VINCI Airports, it has already reduced more than 90% of its direct carbon emissions. The recent introduction of biometric boarding, known as Biometrics Experience by VINCI Airports, is one of several projects designed to modernize the travel experience while keeping environmental impact low.
