Madeira Airports Boom In March 2024

Airports in Madeira achieved record-breaking passenger numbers in March. The occupancy rate is also increasing.

New Passenger Record In March

DREM (Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released the latest statistics on Porto Santo and Madeira International Airport. In March 2024, airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira counted a movement of 414.500 passengers, carried by 2.779 commercial flights, with year-on-year variations of +5.7%. That’s 92 flights per day on average, considering both landings and takeoffs.

Both International And Domestic Traffic Went Up

During March 2024, each aircraft (considering both landings and takeoffs) transported an average of about 155 passengers at Madeira Airport, compared to nearly 72 passengers at Porto Santo Airport, indicating increased demand. In that month, passenger movements in RAM airports showed positive year-on-year variations in international traffic (+3.1%) and domestic segment (+8.8%), reflecting Easter falling in March and increased travel by Madeirans and other Portuguese during the holiday period.

International Traffic Dominates In Madeira

At Madeira Airport, international traffic predominated (52.6%) over domestic (47.4%), while Porto Santo Airport had a prevalence of domestic traffic (58.6% of the total) with a smaller disproportion compared to February 2024. Regular flights at RAM airports in March accounted for 91.4% of total aircraft movements and 93.6% of passengers.

Occupancy Rate Increasing And Heading Towards 90%

During the month, aircraft occupancy at RAM airports was around 87.9%, with Madeira Airport reaching 88.5% and Porto Santo at 72.9%. These rates were higher compared to the same period last year, which had occupancy rates of 82.6%, 83.4%, and 60.9%, respectively.

Q1 2024: More Than 1 Million Passengers

In the first quarter of 2024, passengers embarked and disembarked at RAM airports totaled approximately 1,066,900, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located in national territory, including domestic connections (47.9% of the total) and the other half to international traffic (52.1%).

UK, Germany, France As Key Markets

The United Kingdom was the main origin and destination country for international flights from RAM airports (31.1%), followed by Germany (20.9%) and France (5.0%), indicating key markets contributing to tourism in the region. Note, that this does not reflect the nationality of passengers.
