Madeira and China Discuss Closer Economic and Cultural Ties

The Chinese Ambassador to Portugal met today with Madeira’s Representative to strengthen ties in many economic sectors.

Chinese Ambassador Meets with Madeira’s Representative

The Chinese Ambassador to Portugal, Zhao Bentang, met today with Ireneu Barreto, the Representative of the Republic for Madeira, at the historic Palace of São Lourenço in Funchal. The meeting focused on how Madeira and China can work more closely together in areas such as trade, culture, science, tourism, and education.

Education and Language Interests Growing Between the Two Sides

During the discussion, Ambassador Zhao pointed out the growing interest in the Portuguese language in China. Today, Portuguese is taught in 47 universities across China. Both sides see this as a strong foundation for cultural and educational exchange.

During the meeting, various matters of mutual interest were discussed, such as the importance of economic relations between Portugal and China, as well as the significant interest that the Portuguese language has generated in that Eastern country, where it is taught at 47 universities.

Tourism and Business Also on the Table

Ambassador Zhao visited Madeira last year with a group of Chinese businesspeople. During this return visit, he and Representative Barreto spoke about tourism needs in Madeira and how both sides can work together in the future. They discussed the current challenges and looked for ways to increase cooperation in trade, education and investment.

The presence of Chinese-owned businesses and the involvement of Chinese nationals in the local economy were also highlighted as valuable for the region. Madeira’s officials recognize that these connections already play a part in the island’s development.

Madeira has many economic and tourism resources, as well as opportunities for investment, renewable energy, and maritime research cooperation. Through Three Gorges, the Chinese state has a significant stake in EDP (Energias de Portugal). We asked the ambassador whether the blackout was caused by a cyberattack. "I don't know."

China Seeks to Open a Chinese Language Center in Madeira

With around 26,000 Chinese people residing in Portugal, most of them in the Lisbon region, the Chinese ambassador also put forward the idea of opening a Chinese language center at the University of Madeira.

We are studying the possibility of establishing a Chinese language center with the University of Madeira. I believe all of this will help foster deep cooperation between Madeira and China.

Long-Standing Interest in China Acknowledged

Ambassador Zhao thanked Ireneu Barreto for his ongoing interest in China, a country he has visited several times. He said he looked forward to continuing to build on the relationship between China and Madeira and to finding more ways the two can cooperate in the future.
