IPMA Says Conditions Will Worsen From Tuesday, Dec. 9
The regional delegate of Portugal’s Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in Madeira, Ricardo Tavares, said the coming days will begin with very cloudy skies, possible light rain, and weak to moderate winds from the south. According to IPMA, weather conditions are expected to worsen from the morning of Tuesday, December 9.
Wind Gusts May Reach 60–75 km/h on Tuesday, Dec. 9
From Tuesday, the wind is expected to become strong from the southwest. IPMA forecasts gusts of up to 60 kilometers per hour in the eastern and western parts of Madeira and up to 75 kilometers per hour in the mountains. On Wednesday, December 10, the wind should turn to the north and lose strength.
Heavy Rain Expected From Afternoon of Dec. 10, IPMA Says
Ricardo Tavares described Wednesday as the most difficult day in the forecast and warned of intense rain later in the day.
Periods of rain are expected, at times heavy from the start of the afternoon, later changing to showers that will be more frequent and intense on the northern slopes and in the highlands of the island of Madeira, already early on the 10th.
North Coast and Porto Santo May See 4-Meter Waves From Dec. 8
Sea conditions are also expected to worsen. On the north coast and in Porto Santo, waves from the northwest are forecast to reach between 3 and 3.5 meters, briefly falling to 2 to 2.5 meters on Sunday. From late Monday morning, Dec. 8, wave heights may increase to between 3.5 and 4 meters, then slowly decrease during Tuesday.
On the south coast, waves from the west and southwest are expected to rise from 1 to 1.5 meters to between 1.5 and 2.5 meters on Dec. 8, reaching 2.5 to 3.5 meters in the western part of the island. The decline is expected to begin late Tuesday.
IPMA also said there may be rain warnings from Tuesday afternoon, particularly for the south coast, highlands, and Porto Santo, as well as sea warnings for the north coast and Porto Santo on Monday and Tuesday.
