Project Planning Already Completed This Year
The Regional Government of Madeira is working on extending the existing VR1 from its current endpoint in Ribeira Brava to the town center of Ponta do Sol. This was confirmed by Pedro Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, during the 282nd anniversary celebration of the parish of Tabua.
The goal is to free up the coastal road for more local and tourist traffic, making circulation safer and more efficient.
According to Rodrigues, work on the route design is already in progress. The goal is to build a four-lane road further inland, away from the coastal area, to allow faster and safer travel. The plan is part of a larger road concession that is expected to move forward next year, once the project planning phase ends in late 2025.
Steady Increase in Traffic Requires Answers
The decision comes in response to growing concerns about traffic congestion in the western part of the island. Authorities want to reduce the number of vehicles on the coastal road, especially those passing through, and instead use it more for local and tourism-related movement.
By directing through-traffic to the new inland route, officials hope to make the coastal road safer and more pleasant for everyday use. The project aims to improve road access for both residents and visitors in the area.
Construction to Last Up to Three Years
Rodrigues said the construction phase will take between two and a half and three years. Once finished, the road will stand out as one of the most significant public works in Madeira in the coming decade.
The project is expected to create a more effective road system, easing daily commutes and connecting communities more smoothly. Although specific budgets were not shared, the project is seen as a major commitment by the regional government.
