Traffic Chaos: Madeira’s West Coast Choked With Cars

Extreme traffic and long delays are plaguing Western Madeira, where commuters faced hours of congestion again this morning.

As reported by Diário de Notícias Madeira, drivers on Madeira’s western coast described the situation as “infernal”. They faced hours long delays this morning, as traffic between Calheta, Ponta do Sol and beyond moved at a crawl.

Several drivers have complained about the stop-and-go traffic this morning between Calheta and Ponta do Sol and expressed frustration over this recurring situation. Motorists say traffic has been congested for more than two hours.

Despite efforts to extend the VR1 and build additional tunnels, the government has not proposed any immediate solutions to the problem. Either way, any measures from a government relying solely on ever-increasing tourism are likely to be disruptive and inconvenient for residents.
