Eight-Minute Fireworks Display Launched from 58 Locations With 97,000 Shots

The traditional New Year’s Eve fireworks show in Funchal lasted eight minutes and featured 97,000 individual shots - that is 7000 more than last year. Fireworks were set off from 58 positions, including 26 in the amphitheater, 25 along the seafront avenue, and five on boats in the bay. In total, 22 tonnes of pyrotechnic material were used, offering a vivid spectacle despite low clouds, wind, and light rain affecting visibility in some areas.

Porto do Funchal Attracted Over 30,000 Visitors Including 22,000 Cruise Passengers

The New Year celebrations drew a large crowd to Funchal’s port, with more than 30,000 people attending. Among them, 22,000 were passengers arriving on 11 cruise ships and one sailing vessel. Notable ships included Bollete, Spirit of Adventure, Ambience, Santa Maria Manuela, and AIDAbella. The Silver Muse, which had planned its inaugural stop in Madeira, cancelled its visit on New Year’s Eve.

Low Attendance Earlier in the Day Did Not Affect Evening Festivities

Earlier in the day, Funchal streets were relatively quiet, with few people present. Organizers and authorities reported that bad weather warnings and some rainfall may have deterred daytime visitors. However, by evening, large crowds gathered to witness the fireworks, many of them tourists who came specifically for the event.

Regional Government Invested 4.6 Million Euros for Holiday Season Events

The Madeira regional government allocated €4.6 million to fund Christmas and New Year celebrations, which ran from December 1 to January 7, 2026. That is €500.000 more than last year. Hotel occupancy during the New Year period reached nearly 100%, reflecting strong tourism demand despite rainy conditions. The festivities included multiple performances, decorations, and the high-profile pyrotechnic show that closed the year.
