The Administration of Ports of Madeira (APRAM) will conduct studies next year to evaluate the possible construction of a marina for megayachts, Secretary of Economy José Manuel Rodrigues announced today. Regional Budget Earmarks Funds to Support Maritime Projects Including Megayachts

Rodrigues explained that over half of the 128 million euro budget for the Economy Secretariat will go to investments, including port infrastructure. Around 70 million euros from regional and European funds are planned to support projects that encourage business development, tourism, and employment in strategic sectors.

What is Special About a Megayacht Marina?

A megayacht marina differs from a normal marina in several key ways, designed specifically for very large and high-value yachts:

Size and Depth of Berths – Megayachts often exceed 30 meters in length and require deeper water and longer berths than standard boats. Normal marinas typically serve boats under 20 meters.

Infrastructure and Facilities – They need reinforced docks, specialized mooring systems, and larger turning basins. Utilities such as high-capacity electricity, fresh water, and advanced waste management are essential.

Services Offered – Megayacht marinas provide premium services, including concierge, refueling, maintenance, repairs, provisioning, crew support, and security. Ordinary marinas usually offer only basic berthing and minimal maintenance.

Luxury Standards – Facilities are often designed with high-end aesthetics, exclusive lounges, fine dining, and private access areas, catering to wealthy clients.

Economic Focus – Megayacht marinas target a high-spending niche market, often attracting international visitors, whereas normal marinas primarily serve local or recreational sailors.

In short, a megayacht marina is larger, deeper, and more service-intensive, designed for luxury yachts and wealthy clients, while a standard marina serves smaller, everyday recreational vessels.
