Madeira Ports Authority Joins Port Innovation Forum in Barcelona

APRAM is taking part in the 'Ports and Innovation' forum in Barcelona with about 30 ports, with a focus on shore power for ships at berth.

Madeira's ports authority, APRAM, is taking part in an international meeting in Barcelona on the future of ports. The forum, called 'Ports and Innovation', is organised by the CTI Cities Today Institute together with the Port of Barcelona.

APRAM is represented by Miguel Branco, director of its Planning and Investment Department, and project coordinator Ricardo Quaresma.

About 30 Ports, From Hamburg to Los Angeles, Meet in Barcelona

The meeting brings together about 30 representatives of international ports. They include Hamburg, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Stockholm, Seattle, Los Angeles, Valencia and Algeciras, as well as Leixões in northern Portugal.

Access to the forum is restricted. It gives participants the chance to share experience and to see the technology and strategies other ports are using.

Topics on the agenda include the future of ports, the use of artificial intelligence in port management and digital twins. Mobility, connectivity, the energy transition and cyber resilience are also being discussed.

Shore Power Is APRAM's Main Interest, With Its Own Projects Under Way

APRAM, which reports to the Regional Secretariat for the Economy, says its presence is especially relevant for Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems. This technology, known as shore power, lets ships at berth plug into electricity on land so they can switch off their engines.

The company is developing its own projects in this area, it said in a statement sent to the newspaper JM. It sees the forum as a chance to learn more about how other ports install and run these systems.

Barcelona Trip Follows a Nearly 5 Million Euro Plan for Funchal Port

The trip comes shortly after APRAM announced a plan to invest close to 5 million euros in the Port of Funchal. That plan prepares the port for larger cruise ships, with new mooring bollards, new water and sewage pipes and more border control booths.

The statement did not say when APRAM's shore power projects might be ready, or how much they would cost.
