Madeira Prison Close to Capacity Limit, Holding 341 Inmates

The Estabelecimento Prisional do Funchal (Cancela prison) currently has a total of 341 inmates. This figure was mentioned during a Christmas event held inside the prison and reported by RTP Madeira. Of the 341 inmates held at Cancela prison, around 250 or 73% are from Madeira. This number was confirmed during the event by prison representatives. Already back in 2010, the number of foreign prisoners made up 30%, meaning the number has slightly declined.

The remaining inmates are of several nationalities, whereas it did not say how many were Portuguese. According to the information provided, they include citizens from various European Union countries, as well as Venezuela, China, São Tomé and Príncipe, Brazil, and Russia.

Property Crimes Lead Convictions, Followed by Drug Trafficking

Most inmates are serving sentences for crimes against property. Drug trafficking is the second most common category of offense among the prison population. Approximately 140 of the 341 inmates took part in the Christmas celebration held inside the prison. The event included music and messages from invited guests - messages addressed to inmates focused on dignity and social reintegration.
