Earthquake Struck Near Deserta Grande at 23:19h, Felt in Eastern Madeira
A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck the waters near Deserta Grande on Wednesday night. The epicenter was located about 8 kilometers east-northeast of Deserta Grande at a depth of 12 kilometers. Residents in eastern Madeira reported feeling the tremor, which reached intensity III on the Modified Mercalli scale, but authorities confirmed there were no injuries or property damage.
First Aftershock of Magnitude 1.4 Occurred Early Thursday Morning Roughly 9 Kilometers from Main Epicenter
In the early hours of Thursday, IPMA recorded a minor aftershock at 5:18h local time. Measuring 1.4 on the Richter scale, the microquake occurred about 10 kilometers deep and roughly 9 kilometers from the main earthquake’s epicenter behind Deserta Grande. The tremor was not felt by residents on the island.
Second Aftershock Registered at 7:32h, Only 3 Kilometers from Original Earthquake Site
A second minor tremor of magnitude 1.4 followed at 7:32h, just over two hours after the first aftershock. Its epicenter was located only 3 kilometers from the 3.9-magnitude earthquake site. Like the previous microquake, this tremor was not felt on land.
