Traffic on Madeira’s Roads Has Increased in Recent Years

Traffic in Madeira, especially around Funchal, has increased significantly in recent years. More vehicles are using major roads like Via Rápida and Via Expresso, showing steady growth. Below are the key numbers that explain this rise and the related increase in fuel consumption.

Growth in Vehicle Traffic (2023–2025)

First half of 2025 vs. 2024:

• Via Rápida: traffic up 5.1%

• Via Expresso: traffic up 5.9%

Average daily vehicles:

• Via Rápida: 38,700

• Via Expresso: 7,500

Since 2019, traffic has increased by:

• 16.2% on Via Rápida

• 25.0% on Via Expresso

Fuel Consumption Trends (First Half of 2025)

Fuel consumption continues to rise, even as the number of electric vehicles grows alongside cars powered by fossil fuels.

Fuel consumed: 82.8 million liters (+3.0% from 2024)

• Diesel: 53.6 million liters (+0.1%)

• Gasoline 95 octane: 23.0 million liters (+7.6%)
