South Coast Faces Orange Weather Warning Between 00:00 and 06:00 on January 1, 2026
The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange weather warning for Madeira’s south coast due to heavy and persistent rainfall expected between 00:00 and 06:00 on January 1, 2026. Residents are advised to take precautions, as the rain may disrupt travel and outdoor activities during the New Year’s early hours.
Yellow Weather Warnings Extend from 18:00 December 31 to 12:00 January 1
Before and after the peak rainfall period, the south coast will remain under a yellow alert. IPMA forecasts precipitation between 18:00 on 31 December and midnight, and again from 06:00 to 12:00 on 1 January. These warnings indicate the possibility of rain that may affect local roads and transport.
Mountainous Areas Face Stronger Winds Up to 115 km/h
In Madeira’s high-altitude regions, an orange warning is also in place for rain from 00:00 to 06:00 on 1 January. The mountains will experience yellow wind alerts from 18:00 on 31 December to 09:00 on 1 January, with gusts potentially reaching 115 km/h. Authorities advise caution, particularly for vehicles and pedestrians in exposed areas.
North Coast Under Yellow Alerts With Winds Up to 80 km/h
The northern parts of Madeira will experience yellow alerts for rainfall between 18:00 on 31 December and 12:00 on 1 January. Wind warnings are valid from 00:00 to 09:00 on 1 January, with gusts up to 80 km/h. “Residents should remain vigilant and follow local safety instructions,” IPMA recommended.
