Madeira’s Cinemas: 10% Fewer Screenings and 6.5% Drop in Audience

Madeira's cinemas see a drop in screenings, audience and box office revenue.

Fewer Screenings and Viewers Reported in First Quarter

Cinema activity in Madeira has declined in the first three months of 2025, according to recent data from the Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual (ICA). Between January and March, local theaters held 3,062 film sessions - 9.8% less than during the same period in 2024. This represents a noticeable decrease in the number of opportunities for residents and visitors to see films on the big screen.

Ticket Sales and Box Office Revenue Also Fall

The downward trend was not limited to the number of screenings. The Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira (DREM) reported that cinema audiences also shrank, with 39,510 people attending screenings in the first quarter. This is a 6.5% drop compared to last year.
At the same time, box office revenue fell by 4.1%, totaling around €240,000. These declines suggest not only that fewer films are being shown, but also that fewer people are buying tickets.

A Broader Slowdown for the Local Cinema Industry

The data raise questions about how cinemas on the island are adapting to changing public interest, streaming services, and possibly tighter family budgets. With these recent figures, cinema operators and cultural authorities may need to reassess how to draw audiences back into theaters.
