Major Cruise Lines See Madeira as a Strategic Stop in Atlantic Itineraries
Cruise companies including Costa, Marella, MSC, and Holland America Line plan to maintain or even increase their visits to the ports of Funchal and Porto Santo in the coming years. This update comes from discussions between the companies and the Madeira Port Administration (APRAM) during Seatrade Europe 2025, the largest European cruise fair, held this week in Hamburg, Germany.
Paula Cabaço, president of APRAM, said in a public note:
The conversations we had in Hamburg leave us very optimistic. The cruise sector is experiencing a period of great activity, and it is very significant to see that we are already negotiating bookings four to five years in advance, which demonstrates Madeira’s importance as a port of call and as a reference point in the Atlantic corridor.
Positive Feedback and Sales Data Confirm Madeira’s Growing Popularity Among Cruise Passengers
APRAM highlighted that Madeira has received strong sales and consistently positive feedback from cruise passengers. The island has become a preferred destination for Atlantic island itineraries, especially for the German and British markets, which remain key contributors to European cruise traffic. This attention underscores Madeira’s strategic importance in connecting the Atlantic corridor with international cruise routes.
APRAM Strengthens International Partnerships and Promotes Madeira as a Safe, Competitive Destination
At Seatrade Europe 2025, APRAM represented Madeira in the 'Cruise' pavilions alongside the Atlantic Islands (including the Canary Islands, Azores, and Cape Verde) and Cruise Portugal, which represents most of Portugal’s ports. The presence aimed to build trust with international partners and showcase Madeira as a safe, competitive, and high-value destination for global cruise operators.
Collaboration with Cruise Industry Supports Education and Career Opportunities for Young People
APRAM representatives met with the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) to discuss joint educational projects during the Hamburg trip. One key initiative, 'All Aboard,' aims to introduce children and young people to careers in the cruise industry. The program reflects Madeira’s long-term strategy to combine tourism growth with educational and professional development opportunities, creating stronger ties between the island and global cruise operators.
